Oil in the Tundra - HW #1 week 3
In 1968, oil geologists found a large oil deposit in northern Alaska. The deposit was estimated to contain 10 to 20 billion barrels of oil, making it the largest oil field in the United States. To transport the oil from Alaska's north coast to port cities along the south coast, oil companies built an 800-mile pipeline extending from Prudhoe Bay to the port of Valdez. Before the pipeline was built, many environmental studies were done to determine the potential impact the pipeline might have on huge herds of caribou and other species of birds and fish.
