Same story as with 3-2-1, but with ten multiple choice question this time. From STECK-VAUGHN COMPREHENSION SKILLS: FACTS 2 "Basketball Begins" Basketball is the only major sport that is a totally American game. Jim Naismith started it all. During the 1880's, Naismith taught athletics at a college in Massachusetts. In the fall, Naismith's students spent long, exciting hours on the football field. But when wintwer came, the students moved indoors and did exercises. Most students soon grew bored. Thry kept asking for an indoor game that was as exciting as football. So Naismith began to think about a new kind of ballgame that could be played safely in the small gym. He decided that players wouldn't use bats or run while holding the ball. Players would only use their hands to pass or throw the ball to other players. Naismith still had one big question. How would playwers score points? He went to the college storeroom and pulled out two peach baskets! There was a balcony all around the gym. It was exactly ten feet above the floor. Naismith hung one peach basket at each end of the balcony. Then, he divided the class into two teams of nine players each. The first basketball game began when he threw a soccer ball up between the team captains. The players dashed up and down the gym. They yelled with excitement as they tried to throw the ball into the peach baskets. The game stopped for a while when one player finally sank the ball. Somebody climbed a ladder to get it out. After all, there is no hole in the bottom of a peach basket! But that was the only pause in this first basketball game. The final score was 1-0. As basketball quickly became more popular at other colleges, teams made up their own rules. However, a set of rules was developed within a few years. A special ball and an open hoop took the place of the soccer ball and the peach baskets. The game of basketball had begun.
