KETTLEDRUMS
A kettledrum is a kind of drum with a skin stretched over a large shell. The shell is in the shape of a bowl. The skin is held tightly in several different ways. It may be held by screws or may be tied on with a narrow strip of leather.

Kettledrums are usually played in pairs. Each one has a different pitch, which means that the musical tone of one kettledrum is higher or lower than the other. One person plays both drums. It is believed that the kettledrum was first used in the Middle East. From there, its use spread through Africa, Asia, and Europe.

AN INVITATION
Dear Mrs. Connolly.
I am writing to ask you to come to the Winter Concert at Dove Springs Elementary School this weekend. My choir will sing in the concert, and some children will play songs on xylophones and cymbals.

You should come because the music will be wonderful. The choir and musicians have been practicing for six weeks. Also, all the performers will wear traditional costumes from other countries. We will look very interesting!

The concert is Saturday at 7 P.M. I hope you can come.

Your neighbor,
Julia
