The Reason Why

"How about a snack?" Kim asked Alicia. Alicia, a new girl at school, had come home with Kim. Earlier that week Alicia had told Kim how difficult it was to be a new student at a school. Kim wanted to make Alicia feel welcome. She even hoped that she and Alicia would become close friends.

A few minutes later, Kim's older brother walked into the kitchen carrying a tennis racket. "Hi, I'm Lee," he said. Alicia's face lit up when she saw Lee. Soon the two were talking excitedly about tennis while Kim fixed sandwiches. As they ate, Alicia and Lee continued talking. It seemed to Kim that Alicia had completely forgotten about her.

When they finished eating, Kim suggested that she and Alicia go outside to play with Petunia, the family's dog. Lee followed, suggesting that they throw tennis balls to Petunia.

Later, after Alicia had gone home, Kim began to pout. She said, "Thanks a lot, Lee. I think you and Alicia were both rude. Now, whenever she comes over, she'll be coming to see you, not me."

Lee was surprised at his sister's outburst. They rarely had disagreements. He didn't even know what he had done wrong. He thought he had simply been a good host to Kim's friend.

Although Kim's feelings were still hurt, she greeted Alicia with a smile the next day at school. Alicia told Kim that she enjoyed her visit. "I'm so glad that I got to meet Lee," she said. "I have a brother his age." Then her face fell. "I don't get to see him very often, though. He goes to college in another state. It's so lonely without him."

Kim immediately understood that Alicia had not been rude at all. "We loved having you visit us," she replied. "Why don't you call your mother and ask her if you can come again today?"
