One day I saw a kingbird sitting on a fence post near my garden. Suddenly he flew down to the pea vines that were climbing up some cords stretched between posts. Several times he fluttered above the posts and then dropped down again. Wondering what could be the matter, I hurried down the path, but the bird flew back to the fence. When I reached the vines, I found hanging from the end post a piece of cord about a foot long. It was the end of the rows of cords on which the vines were climbing. The bird had been trying to get this for his nest. I went back to the house, got a pair of scissors, and cut the cord, letting it fall to the ground. Then I left the garden. I hardly reached the house again when the bird flew down and picked up the cord. He then flew up to a hickory tree in which he was building a nest.
