"Who will volunteer to fly over enemy fortified area and send back the plan of its defenses? I say send back because whoever volunteers is not likely to come back."

One was chosen from the many volunteers. He received his instructions and climbed quickly into an observation plane. The motors roared. His comrades lined up, and each lifted two fingers in a V-for-Victory signal. He smiled and lifted two fingers in reply. There was a rush, a suck of air, and he was gone.

He did not come back, but a photograph of the defenses did. In his plane was a machine about the size of a typewriter. This machine had the power to send a photograph through the air. Back at headquarters there was a similar machine, which took the photograph out of the air and printed it instantly for the commanding officer to see. This marvel is called radio facsimile.
