Making Generalizations - Tonya's Kitten

Tonya's Kitten

Tonya's parents had promised her that she could get a dog or cat on her eleventh birthday. The day had come at last! She couldn't wait to go to the pet store in the mall. She knew that most pet owners love their pets, and she would, too.

Tonya's parents had told her that she would have to take care of the new pet by herself. She would give it water and food, and she would take care of it if it became ill.

Tonya's heart pounded in her chest as she walked into the pet store. She looked at the animals in their cages. The kittens were snuggled together, sound asleep. Like all puppies, the puppies were quite playful. Tonya didn't know which to choose, a puppy or a kitten.

Tonya asked the owner of the pet store for his advice. He said, "Owning a pet is always lots of fun. I think you should simply choose the animal that steals your heart."

Tonya walked past the cages again. A tiny brown puppy licked her hand. The puppy had soft fur and a pink tongue. Then Tonya walked over to the kittens. A black kitten awakened and stretched. The kitten looked at Tonya and meowed, as if to say, "Choose me!" It had the most beautiful green eyes Tonya had ever seen.

Tonya couldn't resist the kitten's plea. She picked it up and announced that the kitten would be her new pet. Then she asked the owner how to take care of it. He gave her several helpful hints and handed her a booklet called "Taking Care of Your Kitten."

When they got home, Tonya made a soft bed for her new kitten, Midnight. She held Midnight in her arms. "Cats make the best pets of all," she told her parents.
