What am I? When I am very young, I sleep in the ground. When I am older, I sleep all day, like an owl. Some flowers shut as soon as it grows dark. As they close up, I wake up. When the evening primrose opens its nectar cups, then I frolic with my brothers and sisters. I never think of sleeping, even when the new moon is sailing the skies like a little boat. I have wings with which to fly, and a little light to flash and twinkle in the dark. Most wonderful of all, my light is a secret, and the wisest man never has been able to make one like it. The light that my candle gives is cool. When I fold my wings right over my light, they do not even get warm.
