Chapter 10: How Matter Works
Everything has matter. Some properties of matter are observed with the senses. Others, such as mass, volume, and density, are measured. Matter can be a solid, liquid, or gas. The particles in matter are closely connected in solids, loosely connected in liquids, and free floating in gases. Matter may change its state when heated or cooled. If matter is made up of one type of particle, it is an element. Scientists have identified more than one hundred different elements, which are listed in a periodic table.
