"The sun is very hot. Surely you can let me have just a little of the donkey's shade-only a little-for my head," said the driver. "Certainly not," cried the traveler. "Did I not hire the donkey for the whole journey?" "Yes," said the angry driver, "you certainly hired the donkey, but not the donkey's shadow. That still belongs to me." And with these words he began to push the traveler out of the small shadow into the burning sun. While they were thus arguing and fighting, the donkey became frightened, took to his heels, and ran away as fast as he could. The two men stopped quarreling and looked at each other, as much as to say, "Now look what you have done!" There was nothing to do but return home on foot, by the way they had come. Before they had gone far, the traveler wished that he had not been so greedy, especially since the driver refused to carry any of the luggage.
