Tom's class promised to buy a slide for the new playground. The children had a meeting to plan how to earn money. Tom told how he had earned enough the winter before to buy a sled. "We had two bushels of black walnuts at home. Mother said she would pay me for shelling them. It was hard at first to make the shells break so that I could get the meats out. After a while I learned just how to pound them so that I could pick out the meats very quickly. I found all the neighbors were glad to have their nuts shelled and I soon had more than enough to pay for my sled."
