Dr. John Williamson felt certain that somewhere on a great plain in Tanganyika was the neck of an old volcano which was crammed full of diamonds. He knew that when a volcano spews diamonds from deep in the earth, it also sends up many garnets and ilmenites. By counting the number of these semiprecious stones in equal areas of earth in a line across the plain, he located the exact spot where he thought the throat of the old volcano must be. Digging deep at this place, he found more diamonds than any man before him. Dr. Williamson laughed when the world's largest diamond com-pany offered him $20,000,000 for the 4.5 square miles he had fenced in. So far, the finest stone found is a 23-carat pink diamond. This stone was Dr. Williamson's wedding gift to Princess Elizabeth, who became Queen Elizabeth II of England. Dr. Williamson died while still in his mid-forties.
