Drawing Conclusions 2

Erika's Gift

Erika tore the paper off her gift. "Just what I wanted!" she exclaimed. She held up the new camera and a roll of film.

Erika had decided that she wanted to become a wildlife photographer some day. She had spent hours looking at images of animals in magazines like National Geographic She had read books about photography and cameras. Now she had her own camera! "A good place to start would be right in my own back yard," she thought.

Ericka's house sat on the top of a hill. Her back yard sloped down to a clump of trees and a small pond. Her family often spotted raccoons, squirrels, birds, and even deer from the kitchen window. Erika liked to take walks in the yard just so she could be outside.

Ericka carefully read the instruction booklet that came with the camera. Then she loaded the film. At last, she was ready to take some pictures! She went outside and walked toward the pond. Along the way, she took a picture of a blue jay. The blue jay flew away just as she snapped the shutter. This didn't discourage her, though, because she had read that photographers must take many pictures to get one good shot.

At that moment, Erika saw a deer walk to the pond. The deer didn't see her because he was several yards away. It looked cautiously around and then lowered its head. As it began drinking, Erika quietly adjustedthe zoom lens on her camera, She knew that she could get a close-up shot of the deer even from this distance.

Erika aimed the camera at the deer and began clicking. When she had shot five pictures, she stopped. She wanted to have time to watch this beautiful animal as it wandered away. She smiled as she looked at the deer. She knew she had taken at least one fabulous shot.
