The Purloined Letter II - On the Trail

Often good detective work means "putting the pieces together" in a case. Sometimes, however, one or more of the pieces may be missing. Then the detective must look closely at the evidence and use his or her reason to supply what is missing, or omitted.

The reader as detective also must be able to supply omissions. First, review the facts found in a story. Then, use your reason to supply scenes and events which do not actually appear in the selection. The following questions will help you develop this skill.
