Theme #1 Reading Skills Assessment, Narrative Elements #2

Barbara's family flew from Texas to Germany. They arrived on a cold, rainy day in September. Barbara's father had just been assigned to a military base near Frankfurt. The family was not getting off to a very good start. They arrived late, and no place on the base was open for supper. They took a taxi to a restaurant near the base, but the menu was in German. No one in the family had learned the language yet. They had to guess at what they ordered. When the waiter brought their food, Barbara ended up with liver soup! She ate a little of it, but she really didn't like liver at all.
"I'm not sure I'm going to like living her," Barbara said to her dad just before she went to bed that night. "Everything is so different! I don't see how I'm ever going to learn to speak German."
"It'll bet better, Barb," her father reassured her. "You're going to love traveling to France, Italy, and other countries. And starting tomorrow, you, Mom and I are signed up to take German lessons. Once you learn a few words and phrases, you'll feel more at ease here. I bet you have already learned the words for liver soup!"
You're right, Dad," Barb laughed. "Looks like I may be a fast learner after all!"
