Theme #1 Reading Skills Assessment, Characters' Feelings and Actions

Patrick wanted to win the school spelling bee more than anything. He had been practicing for weeks, looking up words in the dictionary and spelling them out loud untl he knew them by heart. He knew, though, that he had some stiff competition in the form of his best friend, Melissa Sanchez. Melissa seemed able to spell any word without even having to study.
Fimally the day of the spelling bee came. As the contest went on, more and more students had to go back to their seats, having missed the words they were given. No one was surprised to see theat the last two students in the contest were Patrick and Melissa.
Mrs. Connors called out the word that Melissa was to spell: GERMANE. Melissa began to spell out loud: "G-E-R-M-A-I-N."
"I'm sorry, Melissa. That's incorrect," Mrs. Connors said. Patrick, spell GERMANE."
"G-E-R-M-A-N-E," Patrick said, with confidence. It was one of the words he had practiced.
"That's correct. Patrick, you're our new spelling champion."
Melissa went over to congratulate Patrick, who was smiling from ear to ear. "I'm happy for you, Patrick. It looks as if all your studying paid off. Maybe I should have practiced more instead of being so sure of myself."
