Quotation Marks v. Italics/Underlining
In some situations, quotation marks are appropriate. Other situations require italics or underlining. Quotation marks are used for direct quotations, short stories, poems, essays, articles, songs, TV episodes, and chapters of books. Italics (or underlining) are used for books, plays, long poems, magazine titles, works of art, movies, TV series, and long musical works. If quotation marks are used within a quotation, the inner quotation marks will be single marks ('), and the double marks will be used outside (").
