BHS Staff Technology Use Survey 2001/2

Please complete the following survey to help the BHS Tech Committee evaluate staff and student needs as we establish a long-term plan for technology implementation and training.

  1. Which of the following describes your typical "level" of use on your teacher workstation.
    Level 1: I use my computer to run a few specific, preloaded programs (e.g., Claris works, Quickmail, EasyGrade Pro).
    Level 2: I use FileMaker Pro to generate documents for tracking student progress.
    Level 3: I do tasks which require the use of two or more programs simultaneously: I successfully navigate between open windows.
    Level 4: I translate files from the internet or email into formats which I access on my computer.
    Level 5: I have high-end programs loaded on my workstation (e.g., Pagemaker, Photoshop, MS. Office), which I frequently use.


  1. How would you describe your ability to organize and protect your files.
    Level 1: I sometimes have difficulty finding my files or saving to a particular folder.
    Level 2: I create, delete and rearrange folders to organize my files
    Level 3: I save important documents to my Retrospect folder for backup.
    Level 4: I move files between folders and drives (e.g., BHS Fileserver, zip drive)
    Level 5: I teach students how to save to the Room 22 Fileserver and organize their folders.


  1. How easily do you adapt to new software?
    Level 1: I generally avoid learning new software, preferring to rely on the programs I already use.
    Level 2: I need training or "human" assistance in learning new programs.
    Level 3: I learn most features of new programs independently with the help of written documentation (e.g.,TRT handouts, manuals) or tutorials.
    Level 4: I can usually transfer my current skills to new programs. I use trial and error with in program "help" to figure out the basics.
    Level 5: I enjoy learning new software. I am not content until I can use the bells and whistles of a new program.


  1. How comfortable are you with simple troubleshooting of computer or printer problems?
    Level 1: I stop using my computer and wait until my TRT or a tech student can fix the problem.
    Level 2: I independently follow written directions for making changes to settings on my computer
    Level 3: My TRT (via phone, email, etc.) can usually "walk" me through troubleshooting steps so I can correct most problems.
    Level 4: I try a few simple troubleshooting techniques on my own (e.g., check chooser, reboot computer or printer) prior to contacting my TRT for help.
    Level 5: I regularly run antivirus and rebuild the desktop to avoid problems.


  1. Level of Use: word processing
    Level 1: I use a word processing program to create simple documents.
    Level 2: I use a word processing program for nearly all my written professional work: memos, tests, work-sheets, letters and home communication.
    Level 3: I edit, spell-check, access thesaurus, include clipart, and change the format of a document.
    Level 4: I import graphics and text from other applications (i.e., Internet)and platforms (e.g., Windows) for use in my word processing program.
    Level 5: I teach students to make full use of word processing programs for their written communication; I teach them how to save and import text and graphics from other applications/platforms.


  1. Level of Use: Technology Presentation
    Level 1: I do not use computer presentations for classroom instruction.
    Level 2: I occasionally present my information to classes or groups using a single application program (e.g., Slide show with Claris word processing, drawing, or spreadsheet; JPeg Viewer)
    Level 3: I sometimes use presentation software (i.e., PowerPoint) to support my instructional presentations.
    Level 3: I frequently present my information and teach my class using presentation programs (i.e.,, PowerPoint), incorporating various multimedia elements such as graphics, charts, video clips, internet links.
    Level 4: I teach my students how to make effective use of presentation software to support the presentation of their research and learning.


  1. Responsible Use/Ethics
    Level 1: I'm unaware of specific ethical issues surrounding computer and internet use.
    Level 2: I know that copyright restrictions apply to computer software and internet information, but I don't address these issues with my students.
    Level 3: I understand district and building rules concerning student and adult use of software, e-mail and internet.
    Level 4: I model ethical use of software and the internet and I let my students know my personal stand on the issue.
    Level 5: I teach my students about copyright restrictions and have clear expectations regarding their use of software and internet for classroom assignments/activities.


  1. Technology Integration
    Level 1: I do not incorporate the use of computer-based technologies into my classroom learning activities.
    Level 2: I understand the district tech plan supports integration of technology into classroom activities, but I am still learning about what strategies will work.
    Level 3: I sometimes encourage my students to employ computer-based technologies, but I do not require them to do so.
    Level 4: For a few specific lessons, I require my students to employ computer-based technologies to support their communication, data analysis and problem solving.
