  1. Basic Computer Use
    Level 1 - I do not use a computer.
    Level 2 - I use the computer to run a few specific, pre-loaded programs.
    Level 3 - I run two programs simultaneously, and have several windows open at the same time.
    Level 4 - I trouble-shoot successfully when basic problems with my computer or printer occur. I learn new programs on my own. I teach basic operations to my students.


  1. File Management
    Level 1 - I do not save any documents I create using the computer.
    Level 2 - I select, open and save documents on different drives (i.e. server or hard drive).
    Level 3 - I create my own folders to keep files organized and understand the importance of a back-up system.
    Level 4 - I move files between folders and drives.


  1. Word Processing
    Level 1 - I do not use a word processing program.
    Level 2 - I occasionally use a word processing program for simple documents.
    Level 3 - I use a word processing program for nearly all my written professional work, I edit, spell check and change the format of a document.
    Level 4 - I teach students to use word processing to help them improve their communication skills.


  1. Spreadsheet
    Level 1 - I do not use a spreadsheet.
    Level 2 - I understand the use of a spreadsheet and can navigate within one. I create simple spreadsheets and charts.
    Level 3 - I use spreadsheets for a variety of record keeping tasks. I use labels, formulas, cell references and formatting tools. I choose charts which best represent my data.
    Level 4 - I teach students to use spreadsheets to improve their own data keeping and analysis skills.


  1. Database
    Level 1 - I do not use a database.
    Level 2 - I understand the use of a database and locate information from a pre-made database.
    Level 3 - I create my own databases. I define the fields and choose a layout to organize information I have gathered. I use my database to answer questions about my information.
    Level 4 - I can use formulas with my database to create summaries of numerical data. I can use database information to mail merge in a word processing document. I use the database not only for my work, but I have used it with students to help them improve their own data keeping and analysis skills.


  1. Graphics
    Level 1 - I do not use graphics with my word processing or presentations.
    Level 2 - I open, create, and place simple pictures into documents using drawing programs, clip art, or images from the Internet.
    Level 3 - I use graphics not only for my work, but have used it with students to help them improve their own communications. I can use graphics and the word processor to create a professional looking newsletter.
    Level 4- I edit and create graphics.


  1. E-mail
    Level 1 - I have an email account but rarely use it.
    Level 2 - I send messages using e-mail, mostly to colleagues, friends, and family. I check my email on a regular basis and keep it organized.
    Level 3- I send and receive attachments with ease. I can set up aliases.
    Level 4 - I incorporate email use into classroom activities. I use email to access information from outside sources (i.e. list servs).


  1. Research/Information Searching
    Level 1 - I am unlikely to seek information when it is in electronic formats.
    Level 2 - I conduct simple searches on the Internet and library software (Alexandria and encyclopedias).
    Level 3 - I use a variety of search strategies such as Boolean language or meta search engines.
    Level 4 - I teach students how to search for information on the Internet and using library software. I teach the students Boolean searches.


  1. Desktop Publishing (i.e. Publisher, Pagemaker, Work, Appleworks)
    Level 1 - I do not use a publishing program.
    Level 2 - I use templates or wizards to create a published document.
    Level 3 - I create original publications from a blank page, combining design elements such as columns, clip art, tables, word art, and captions.
    Level 4 - I teach my students how to create newsletters using the above elements.


  1. Video Production
    Level 1 - I do not use a video camera.
    Level 2 - I create original videos for home or school projects.
    Level 3 - I use computer programs to edit video presentations.
    Level 4 - I teach my students to create and edit videos.


  1. Information Literacy
    Level 1 - I am not familiar with the term information literacy.
    Level 2 -I have library research projects and use electronic resources such as Alexandria, the Internet, and electronic encyclopedias.
    Level 3 - My curriculum includes multiple projects that have an information literacy component. These are team taught with the Library-Media specialist/Tech facilitator. I understand information literacy processes and design student projects so that they require higher level thinking skills.
    Level 4 - I am actively involved in curriculum planning teams and advocate for multidisciplinary units and activities which require information literacy skills. I share successful units with others through print and electronic publishing and through conference presentations and workshops.


  1. Internet
    Level 1 - I do not use the Internet.
    Level 2 - I access school and district websites to find information. I follow links from these sites to various Internet resources.
    Level 3 - I teach students to use available online resources. I use lists of Internet resources and use Internet search engines to explore educational resources.
    Level 4 - I contribute to my school or district websites. I teach students how to effectively use the resources available on the Internet.


  1. Instructional Software Use
    I do not use instructional software as a part of my instructional program, nor am I aware of any titles which might help my students meet their learning goals.
    Level 2 - I use a few computer programs as an instructional supplement, as a reward, or with special needs children.
    Level 3 - I use several programs (drill & practice, simulations, tutorials, etc.) chosen by my department or grade level to help all my students meet specific learning objectives. I use technological resources to meet the needs of students who do not respond to traditional methods of instruction.
    Level 4 - I use instructional software to create projects that integrate a variety of curricular areas.


  1. Presentations
    Level 1 - I do not use computer presentation programs (Powerpoint, Hyperstudio, Kidpix)
    Level 2 - I teach my students how to use presentation software.
    Level 3 - I present my information to classes or groups in a single application program such as a word processor, spreadsheet or publishing program.
    Level 4 - I present my information using presentation programs such as Powerpoint, Hyperstudio, or Kidpix, using various multimedia elements such as sound, video clips and graphics.


  1. Responsible Use/Ethics
    Level 1 - I am not aware of any ethical issues surrounding computer use.
    Level 2 - I know that some copyright restrictions apply to computer software, graphics and information.
    Level 3 - I clearly understand the difference between freeware, shareware, and commercial software and the fees involved in the use of each. I know the programs for which the district or my building holds a site license. I demonstrate ethical usage of all software and let my students know my personal stand on legal and moral issues involving technology. I know and enforce the school's technology policies and guidelines, including its Internet Acceptable Use Policy.
    Level 4 - I am aware of other controversial aspects of technology use including data privacy, equitable access and free speech issues. I can speak to a variety of technology issues at my professional association meeting, to parent groups, and to the general community.


  1. Technology Integration
    Level 1 - I do not blend the use of computer based technologies into my classroom learning activities.
    Level 2 - I understand the district technology plan supports integration of technology into classroom activities, but I am still learning about what strategies will work and how to do it. I accept student work produced electronically but do not require it.
    Level 3 - I am aware of National technology standards (ISTE).
    Level 4 - I use National technology standards when creating technology based lessons.I frequently model and teach my students to employ computer based technologies for communication, data analysis and problem solving.


  1. Professional Growth and Communication
    Level 1 - I do not use electronic resources for professional growth or communication.
    Level 2 - I can find lesson plans and some research in on-line databases. I correspond with parents and other teachers using e-mail.
    Level 3 - I use the Internet and other online resources to obtain research findings, teaching materials and information related to the content of my classes.
    Level 4 - I read electronic newsletters and journals to keep current on educational practices. I participate in electronic discussion groups which are related to my area of education. I both contribute to and use the best practices discussed in those discussions. I participate in distance learning (online courses). I organize professional growth oportunities for other teachers and feel comfortable teaching other staff members about the use of technology.
