Writing 1 - Discursive Writing

The main purpose of discursive writing is to analyze an issue. The writer may present points of vie on the subject and comment on which are most convincing, but he or she must not try to convert the reader to any particular point of view. The main aim is to enlighten the reader - to give information about the particular issues involved.

A typical discussion could be organised like this:

Introduction:
State clearly what the issue is; mention that various opinions exist.

Body Paragraphs:
Consider all sides of the issue; present various arguments and their supporting evidence or reasons.

Conclusion:
Sum up the situation and offer a balanced comment.

Assignment:
Discuss the effect the building of Hong Kong Disneyland on north-eastern Lantau Island will have on Hong Kong's economy.
