17. The Ocean Floor: Ridges (C98)

A ridge of underwater mountains rises up along the center of the three largest oceans. This ridge, from 1 to 3 km (about 0.6 to 2 mi) above the abyssal plains, forms a continuous undersea mountain chain 60,000 km (about 37,280 mi) long tha winds through the Pacific, Atlantic, and Indian Oceans. The Mid-Atlantic Ridge has a deep valley, or rift, in its center. Here two of Earth's tectonic plates are pulling apart.
