Balloon Rocket Lab
Directions: Fill in the appropriate name for each step to the scientific method on the short lines. On the long lines complete that step of the scientific method.
Step 1: State the Problem
How will varying heights effect a balloon rocket’s flight? ______________________________________________________________
Step 2: Gather
Information
See
“Background Information” What information were you
given that will help you?
__
__
Step 3: State Your Hypothesis
__
__
Step 4: Conduct Experiment
& 5 Record & Analyze Data
*Materials Needed: Scissors, straw, balloon, paper, fish line, tape, meter stick
*Jobs: Receiving Station Manager (SM) – Your job is to measure the length of the rocket’s flight and to return the rocket to Mission Control. Mission Control (MC) – Your job is to refuel the rocket with air and launch the rocket by releasing the balloon. Rocket Construction Crew 1,2,&3 (RC) – Your job is to build the rocket and make sure all factors that should not change, remain constant for each test. You are also responsible for making sure the manipulated variable is properly changed.
*Procedure:
1. RCs need to build the balloon rocket as follows:
a. Cut the straw to 8 cm.
b. Give the balloon to MC to blow up. Be sure to check the circumference of the balloon to make sure that it is the same as the length of the string (50 cm). Close the opening.
c. Tap the straw to the balloon between the tip and the opening.
2. MC now needs to:
a. Insert the string end through the straw while it is still attached to the balloon.
b. Hand end of string to RC to hold taut at the proper point on the meter stick while rocket is launched, and while rocket is in flight.
c. Launch the rocket by releasing the end of the balloon.
3. SM will:
a. Measure the actual flight of the rocket, and record in data table.
b. Return the rocket to MC.
**Repeat procedures after changing height at which RCs hold the string.

Step 6: Draw a Conclusion
(Base on data and relate to
hypothesis)
(Why did it or didn’t it match your
hypothesis?)
(What factors were not kept
constant?)
Step 7: Repeat the Experiment
Why? (How can you prove your result
were correct?)
