Letter from Stella Lile, to Mrs. Arnecke dated Feb. 18, 1969 - Joel Wallace entered land near Trinity as early as 1818, adjoining the Lile place. He sold this 160.42 acres to William Austin in 1830, the abstract lists Rebecca as his 1st wife at this time.

The old house you mention near Seneca Springs was a two story frame house demolished about 15 or 20 years ago. There were always empty rooms for the grandchildern and other company.

Joel Wallace also entered a plot containing 16.3 acers in 1818 and sold to John A. Lile before the Civil War.

In Mr. Knox's book about Morgan Co., he mentions that Joel Wallace was asked to help view a road leading from McDonald's Ferry to the county line toward Courtland. This was in 1819.

The following information was given to Sue Arnecke in 1969 or 1970, the writer of the letter was not identified.

Joel Wallace, eldest child of Capt. Thomas and Rebecca Wallace, born on March 13, 1771. He married Esther Houston on a Sunday, 1794 in Ft. Craig, Maryville, TN. She was born in Rockridge Co., VA 1766, daughter of John Houston and Sarah Todd Houston who migrated from Rockridge Co., VA to Blount Co., TN.

In 1810 Joel Wallace, his wife Esther and their six children migrated from Blount Co., TN to AL where they lived on a flat boat until they made their first crop. They settled on a plantation at Sennica Springs, near Trinity, Morgan Co., AL where their house still stands (at this writing). It is a two story frame house with a porch across the front. The burial spot is now called Lile's Graveyard and is located directly behind the house.

Of children of Joel Wallace by first wife Esther Houston Wallace, one was William Stephenson Wallace who was the writer's great grandfather. William Stephenson Wallace was half brother of James Jasper Wallace who married Elizabeth Hamilton.

After the death of Esther Houston Wallace, Joel Wallace married a widow by the name of Rebecca Sulick Jones. Sallie Ann Wallace married Thomas E. Peacock said Rebecca Sulick Jones' maiden name was Wall, and she married 1st a Sulick, and 2nd a Jones. Joel and his 2nd wife Rebecca Wall Sulick Jones Wallace, had James Jasper Wallace, and Milton Monroe Wallace.

Of these two sons, James Jasper was born in AL Feb. 12, 1830 and died Feb. 13, 1905 at Denton TX. He married 1st Elizabeth Hamilton about 1850 and soon afterwards migrated to TX and settled in Wise Co. About 1870 they moved to Denton TX. James Jasper and Elizabeth Hamilton Wallace had Milton Monroe who married Tabitha Blanton. Milton Monroe and Tabitha Blanton Wallace had a son named James Jasper Wallace who married Ida Calhoun of Chico, Wise Co., TX. James Jasper and Ida Calhoun Wallace had sons Escar and Maxey Wallace.

James Jasper's 2nd wife, Sallie Sanlin, and he had no children.

James Jasper's 3rd wife, Maude Jackson and they had Herbert, Walter, and Laura.

This writer went to elementary school with Maxie Wallace at Chico, Wise Co., TX. I have a very faint memory of him at my age of 77. He was at one time Mayor of Snyder, OK, where he moved from Chico, TX.

Writings from Camille Sheilds Wallace -
Joel Wallace was Justice of the Peace in Blount Co., TN, 1790 and an ensign in the Washington County Militia in 1795. He served on the Grand Jury at almost every term of Court. For many years he was in charge of Black's Fort, an old Indian block house, with several men under him. Until 1792, this block house was located in what was then Knox Co. territory, but at that time became Blount Co. Black's Fort was named for Uriah Black, a pioneer settler in Tennessee, and was surrounded by land belonging to the Wallace Families.

James Jasper Wallace stated that Joel had cousins named John, Jesse, and Matthew Wallace and that Matthew had no children.

In 1808 Joel Wallace sold land on the waters of Crooked Creek to Jesse Wallace of Sevier County, this land adjoined that of Abraham Wallace, Pulaske Wallace, and H. Thomas. It is probable that Jesse Wallace was the son of William Wallace (1737-1799).

Joel, his wife Ester and their six children migrated from Blount County, Tenn. to Alabama where they lived on a flat boat until they made their first crop. They settled on a plantation at Sennica Springs, near Trinity in Morgan County, Ala. The two story frame house was still standingin the mid-1900's The burial spot for Esther (Houston) Wallace
was located directly behind the house and at this time was called Lile's Graveyard.

From "History of Blount County Tennessee" by Inez E. Burns, 1957, p 21 - 30: "list of the Blount County Stations and their strength on December 22, 1792: Black's Station - Joel Wallace, Ensign; Men - four". On July 2, 1793 - "six Indians fired on Ensign Joel Wallace at the head of Pistol Creek. He was uninjured except for cuts from a shattered knife handle". "On August 2nd, 1795, the following appointments were made for Blount County: ... Samuel Houston.... Joel Wallace, all Ensigns ..... Clerk: William Wallace, ... Justices of the Peace: William Wallace, Samuel Houston, Mathew Wallace".

Occupation = Cooper (barrel maker)??? source

From Rebecca Price Emmett (horsemom@richmond.infi.net) 6 Aug 1997 -- "She was the ninth and last child of John Houston (one of the original 1735 immigrants). They were married in a fort, on the spot where Maryville, Blount Co., Tenn., now stands. They resided in Blount County until 1810 when they moved to the Southwest where they both died. She was about sixty-three years of age at her death, and died before her husband. Her son, Jno. H. Wallace, writes - 'She died enjoying a full confidence of her acceptance through the Redeemer. I speak assuredly, since I was with her day and night for six weeks before her departure. She selected a text from which she desired her funeral to be preached. My father, Joel Wallace, died at about eighty years of age. From my knowledge of him in early life I have satisfactory evidence to believe he was a true Christian.' After the death of his first wife, he married a second time, but the name of this wife we have never heard. The children were: Sarah, Thos. , Jno. Houston, Wm. Steph'n, Jessie Blackburn, Joel Hall."

Have document from County of Morgan, State of Alabama, Administrator of Rebecca Wallace deceased. It is dated 9 March 1854. Says that Thomas is 58 years old which would make his birth date ca. 1796. Also says that Joel died 17 December 1853 in Morgan Co.

He was licensed to preach about 1828. His fiedl of labor was at New Dublin, Pulaski Co., VA; after this he went to Christiansburg, Montgomery Co. where he preached and taught school until the year of 1837, where his labors were blessed to the edification and grace of the church. In 1837 he moved to Washington Co., VA where he spent the remainder of his life. Until 1850, and for a long time previous, he was the only old school minister in the county. For many years the churches of Walnut Grove and Maple Grove were operated under very discouraging circumstances, yet his labors were not in vain. His salary being small, he was compelled to resort to teaching; and other means in order to support his family.

Later went to Rockbridge Co., VA, completed his study under Rev. Sam Houston,
Ester's Brother.

Liscened to preach in 1828. Read History of Last State of Franklin, by William, page 313, tells of John Houston Wallace.

Catherine H. Hanby was the sister of his son, William Preston Wallace's wife, Jane.

Studied Latin and Greek with the Rev. Samual Rutherford Houston, who was his Uncle. General Sam Houston was his third cousin.

From "Families of Washington County and Bristol, Virginia, 1776- 1996", Compiled by the Holston Territory Genealogical Society, 1996, p. 341 -- "He lived most of his life in Virginia, dying March 7, 1882. He is buried about two miles east of Bristol in Walnut Grove Cemetery."

From a letter written in 1907 by Frances Jane Wallace Teeter -- "My father, Jno H. Wallace, was born Blount County Tennessee and when but a lad removed with his parents to Alabama where he lived until nearly grown. He then returned to Green County entering upon course of study under Rev. Samuel Doak at Tusculum College where he received most of his education. After this he went to Rockbridge County, Virginia, and continued his studies under his uncle Rev. Samuel Houston. He was licensed to preach about 1828. His first field of labor was New Dublin, Pulaski County, Va. After this he went to Christianburg, Virginia, where he preached and taught until 1837 when he moved to Washington County to remain for the rest of his life. He and Martha (Rayburn) had six children: (after her death he remarried three times with no additional issue) amassed a fortune, had thousands of acres of land and a mansion and slaves; had a grist mill, tannery, general store in the area of Virginia which became Wallace in his honor.
