How to Disable Browser Extensions

If you have certain extensions (or add-ons) enabled on your browser, the site may not display as designed. Some browser extensions can track your browsing history, insert ads into websites you visit, and cause other issues on your computer. To disable browser extensions, follow the steps that apply to the browser you are using. If you are unsure of the source of any add-ons installed on your browser, it is a good idea to disable or uninstall them. A good rule of thumb when attempting to troubleshoot your browser's extensions is to disable any extensions that do not come from a trustyworthy source. Trustworthy sources include companies such as Microsoft, Google, Yahoo!, Adobe, or Oracle.

Internet Explorer 7

  1. Click the Tools button in the upper right-hand corner of the browser.
  2. Select Pop-up Blocker and then Manage add-ons
  3. Click on Enable or Disable Add-ons
  4. A new menu will open. Once opened, click on the add-on that you want to disable and at the bottom you will see Enable or Disable Click Disable.
  5. Click Ok to finish.

Internet Explorer 8/9/10

  1. Click the Tools button in the upper right-hand corner of the browser.
  2. Click Manage add-ons.
  3. A menu will open. Click on the add-on that you want to disable.
  4. In the bottom right-hand corner of the add-on window, click the Disable button.
  5. Click Close to finish.

Mozilla Firefox

  1. Click the Firefox menu in the upper left-hand corner of the browser OR click the Tools menu.
  2. Click Add-ons.
  3. A new tab will open. Click Disable or Remove to the right of any extension you wish to disable.
  4. Close the Add-ons Manager tab when you are finished.

Google Chrome

  1. Type the following command into the address bar:
    chrome://extensions
  2. A new tab listing your extensions will appear. Disable the extensions that you don't use or want anymore by unchecking the Enabled box or clicking on the trash can icon on the right side of the page.

Safari

  1. Click Safari on the main tool bar.
  2. Click on Preferences.
  3. Click Extensions at the top of the Preferences window.
  4. Click on the name of the extension you wish to disable on the left side menu.
  5. Uncheck the Enable checkbox listed under the extension's name, or click Uninstall to remove the extensions completely.
  6. Close the Preferences window to finish.
