Use the Import Questions from a text file section to import quiz questions from a text file written in Quia's exclusive question import format. Creating an import file is easy! To do so, follow these steps:

  1. Create a text file according to Quia's simple formatting rules, explained below.
  2. Save the file to your computer. If the text in your file uses accented characters, you must save your file with UTF-8 encoding, which is an option you can choose in the Save as window of your text editor.
  3. Click Browse to select the file from your computer and click Import.

All of the questions from your file will be added to your Question Bank.

How do I write the file in the correct format?

Your import file must include important information about each question, such as the question type (multiple-choice, true-false, etc.), the answer choices, the correct answer, and various optional settings.

First, enter the 2-digit question type code (listed below). Then list the answer choices, correct answer (marked with an asterisk) and other optional settings.

The different question types and their respective 2-digit codes are:

  • multiple choice: mc
  • multiple correct: mt
  • true-false: tf
  • pop-up: pu
  • fill-in: fi
  • initial answer: ia
  • short answer: sa
  • essay: es
  • matching: ma
  • ordering: or

Tip: If you are unsure of how to include a particular setting in your import file, try creating a question in Quia that uses the setting and then exporting it, so that you'll have a template to work with. To do this, go to the Question Bank, search for your question, select its check box, and select Export selected questions from the Actions drop-down list. Save the text file, then edit it and import it.
