Output Devices

VDUvisual display unit (monitor). There are different SIZES - a 18 inch screen means the diagonal is 18 inches.
CADComputer aided design
DTPDesktop Publisher (we use Microsoft Publisher)
LCDLiquid Crystal Display. Used for the screens of portable or laptop computers becuase it is reasonably small and light. Takes up very little space.
Graphical Display UnitsLarger than VDU's with a greater resolution. Often used with light pens for CAD.
ResolutionThe number of dots (piexls) on the screen. CAD or DTP"S require large, high resolution.
Laser PrintersHigh speed and Silent. Excellent print quality. The laser fuses powered ink on to the paper.
Ink Jet PrintersOften referred to as Bubble Jet Printers. High quality but not as high quality as a laser. Relatively quiet. Cheaper to buy than a laser but much more expesive to run. (The ink cartridges cost a lot). The ink is heated up so expandes and 'pop' shooting ink on to the paper. More dots than the dot matrix.
Dot Matrix PrinterMost have been replaced by laser or bubble jet printers but they are still useful. Noisy, as they are impact printers, if you want multi-sheet printing where the top copy goes the the client, the middle yellow one to the accountant and the bottom pink one to the stock warehouse then the dot matrix is your best bet.
Graph PlottersProduce accurate line diagrams, plans and maps
Voice outputSpoken word from the computer via special software that allows you to hear each letter as you type it.
Electrical SignalsUsed for the control of heating systems, burglar alarms, robots etc.
CRTCathode Ray Tube
COMComputer output to Microfilm. Images and text held on microfilm and viewed through a magnifying device. *fast *cheap *Copies Easily *Computer storage
