Words About Sentences

You don't need to be a walking encylcopedia of grammar rules in order to be a good writer. If you have done a lot of reading and writing so far in life, you probably know the correct syntax for effective writing, even if you can't identify the technical, grammatical rule.

However, to talk about writing as we will be doing this semester, you do need to know some terminology that I will be using. I suggest you get to know these words. These words will help you discuss writing at the sentence level.

Comma SpliceWhen you insert a comma between two complete sentences , creating a run-on sentence.
Fused SentenceWhen you have two complete sentences running together with no punctuation.
FragmentAn incomplete sentence missing either the subject or the predicate.
Simple SentenceOne independent clause.
Compound SentenceTwo independent clauses separated by a conjunction.
Complex SentenceOne independent and one dependent clause, separated by a comma.
Compound-Complex SentenceTwo independent and one dependent clauses, separated by a comma.
Declarative SentenceMakes a statement.
Exclamatory SentenceExpresses emotion.
Imperative SentenceGives a command.
Interrogative SentenceAsks a question.
SubjectThe person, place, animal, thing or idea the sentence is about.
PredicateThe part of a sentence that says something about the subject and includes the verb.
PhraseA group of words that does not have a subject and verb.
ClauseA group of words that has a subject and a verb.
Independent clauseA clause that can stand alone: a complete sentence.
Dependent clauseA clause that cannot stand alone. If so, it would be a fragment.
