Structures and Design

What is a structure?Something made up of interdependent parts in a definite pattern or organization.
What is a design?A plan that is an arrangement of elements or details.
What is tensile?Capable of being shaped, bent or drawn out.
What is compressive?Having power or a tendency to compress.
What is shear? To become more or less completely divided as a body under the action of forces.
What is bending? Not remaining rigid or straight; movement that causes the formation of a curve.
What is contracting? The motion of shrinking often due to cold temperatures.
What is deflection? The act of turning aside, or state of being aside; a turning from a proper course.
What is extension?Act of stretching or straightening out a flexed limb.
What is load?Weight or force exerted on a structure.
What is relaxing? The pressure or tension of a confined body of vapor.
What is stretching?Extending an object larger than its usual size.
What is tension? The act of stretching or straining.
What is layered? One layer on top of another.
What are bundles? To tie or bind in a bundle or roll.
What are tubes?A hollow cylinder.
What are squares? An object that has four equal sides and four right angles.
What are angles? The space between two lines or planes that intersect.
What are l-beams?Having a cross section resembling the letter "l".
What are girder beams?A main beam; a straight, horizontal beam to span an opening or carry weight, such as ends of floor beams, etc. A beam is usually made of steel, a main support in a structure.
What are rectangular beams?Beams that are in the shape of a rectangular shape.
What are Q-truss?To strengthen or stiffen, as a beam or girder, by means of a brace or braces.
What are cantilevers?A projecting beam, truss, or bridge unsupported at the outer end.
What are arches?Used to support the wall or other weight above an opening.
What are domes?A roof having a rounded form, hemispherical or nearly so.
What are buttresses?Anything that supports or strengthens, to prop or to brace.
What are keystones?A central stone at the top of an arch.
What is suspension?A structure that involves hanging parts that are supported.
What is compression? To squeeze or constrict with great force.
What is a response? To react or reply in some form.
What is corrugated?A shape that has alternating parallel grooves and ridges.
