| Median Sulcus | the groove that runs down the center of the tongue |
| Lingual Frenulum | the fold of soft tissue that attaches the under surface of the tongue to the floor of the mouth |
| Floor of the Mouth | the soft tissue that lies underneath the tongue |
| Roof of Mouth | the hard and soft tissue that forms the top portion of the mouth |
| Throat | the pathway that leads from the back of the mouth down towards the stomach |
| Anterior Tongue | that portion of the tongue that can move freely |
| Posterior Tongue | the base of the tongue. That portion of the tongue that is anchored to the floor of the mouth |
| Papillae | raised bumps and ridges of soft tissue found on the top and side surfaces of the tongue |
| Circumvallate Papillae | the largest type of papillae, usually numbering between six and twelve. These dome-shaped papillae lie in a v-shaped line across the posterior portion of the tongue just in front of the foramen cecum. |
| Fungiform Papillae | these are mushroom-shaped papillae. They are found in the greatest numbers on the tip and sides of the tongue. |
| Foliate Papillae | papillae that appear as ridges and grooves on the side of the tongue near its base |
| Filiform Papillae | small long, thin hair-like papillae found across the entire surface of the tongue |
| Median Sulcus | the deep groove that runs down the center of the tongue |
| Foramen Cecum | a shallow indentation that lies at the posterior end of the median sulcus |
| Teeth | the hard objects in the mouth that we use to chew food |
| Gums | the soft tissue that surrounds the teeth |
