These words come from our 6th grade textbook, World Cultures, chapter 1. They are geography terms and some words relating to culture.

Map ProjectionWay of showing the curved Earth on a flat surface
TopographyPhysical features of a place or region
VegetationPlant life of a place or region
ElevationHeight above sea level
MountainHigh rugged land that rises above surrounding land
HillArea of raised land that is lower and less steep than a mountain
PlainLarge area of level or gently rolling land
PlateauLarge area of high, flat or gently rolling land
ClimateAverage weather of a place over a period of 20 to 30 years
BayPart of a body of water that is partly enclosed by land
CapeNarrow point of land that extends into a body of water
CoastLand that borders a sea or an ocean
DeltaArea formed by soil deposited at the mouth of a river
DivideRidge that separates rivers that flow in one direction from those that flow in the opposite direction
IsthmusNarrow strip of land joining two large land areas or joining a peninsula to a mainland
LakeBody of water surrounded by land
Mouth of a RiverPlace where a river empties into a larger body of water
PeninsulaPiece of land that is surrounded by water on three sides
RiverLarge stream of water that empties into a lake, an ocean or another river
River ValleyLand drained or watered by a river
Source of a riverPlace where a river begins
StraitNarrow channel that connects two larger bodies of water
TributaryStream or small river that flows into a larger stream or river

Nuclear familyTraditionally, a wife, husband, and their children

DemocracyForm of government in which the people have supreme power
RepublicType of democracy in which the people choose the leaders who represent them
DictatorshipForm of government in which the a ruler holds power by force
TechnologySkills and tools a people use
Cultural diffusionMovement of customs or ideas from one place to another
SubcultureGroup of people within a society who have their own separate beliefs, values and customs
EthnocentrismJudging other cultures by the standards of one’s own culture
RacismBelief that one racial group is superior to another
