What is your philosophy of government?

Due Date:  Tuesday, October 10, 2000

Directions:  Now that you have studied the philosophies of Thomas Hobbes and John Locke, it is time to develop your own philosophy as to why people form governments.  In order to develop your philosophy, answer each of the questions below in great detail.  Provide explanations and examples, where necessary, to enhance understanding of your philosophy.  This assignment will be graded as a test.

1.  When is your philosophy being developed?  What events or experiences are shaping the way in which you view the world around you?

2.  What is your view of human nature? 

3.  What is life like in a state of nature?

4.  What causes people to come together to form governments?

5.  According to your beliefs about human nature and life in the state of nature, what type of government would be a legitimate form of government?

Grading:  Your philosophy will be graded based on the following criteria:

1.  All questions answered
2.  Depth of response to each question (clear explanations)
3.  Clear, concise, accurate use of examples
4.  Understanding and use of key vocabulary
5.  Fluency of response
6.  Attention to grammar, punctuation, usage and spelling
