AL Capone(1899-1947), was an Italian-American gangster of the Prohibition era, also known as Scarface because of a knife cut to his left cheek. He was born Alphonse Capone in Brooklyn, New York. He quit school in the 6th grade and spent nearly ten years with gangs in Brooklyn. During his youth he had many different jobs like being a pinboy in a bowling alley, a clerk in a candy store, and a cutter in a bookbindery. He then joined the five points gang and worked in gangster Frankie Yale’s Brooklyn dive, The Harvard Inn, as a bouncer and bartender. While he was working there he received his facial scars and the nickname “scar face” when he insulted a patron and was attacked by her brother. In 1918 Capone met Mary “Mae” Coughlin his soon to be wife and mother of their son Albert “Sonny” Francis. After Capone hospitalized a rival gang member Yale sent him to Chicago to work for John Torrio. Soon Capone became Torrio’s number 2 man. When Torrio was shot by a rival gang member and left Chicago, Capone took his place and became the boss. Capone controlled organizations dealing in illegal liquor, gambling, and prostitution, and had an income of 100 million dollars. Attempts to kill Capone were never successful. He had a network of spies all throughout Chicago. Capone was very good at taking out his enemies though. A normal Capone murder was when his men rented a room across the street from the victim’s residence and then gunned him down when he steps outside. Capone’s most famous killing was the St Valentine’s Day Massacre. On Febuary 14, 1929, four of Capone’s men entered a garage on Clark street. Since Capone’s men were dressed as policemen, the seven men dropped their guns and put their hands against the wall. Then Capone’s men pulled out two shotguns and two machine guns and fired 150 bullets, killing the seven men. The real target was rival gang leader George “bugs” Moran, he was across the street when he saw Capone’s men in police uniforms so he stayed hidden. Of course Capone had an alibi, he was in Florida during the shooting. Because of gangland’s traditional refusal to prosecute , Capone was never tried for most of his crimes.    In 1931, Capone was indicted for income tax evasion for the years 1925-29. Capone was sentenced to 10 years in federal prison and 1 year in county jail. Capone was sent to Atlanta to serve his sentence. Word Spread that capone had taken over the Atlanta Prison and had it easy ,he was then put in Alcatraz. Once in Alcatraz he was unable to control anyone. After Capones release he spent his time in his Florida home until he died of cardiac arrest on January 25 1947.
