THE JOURNAL PROJECT:  THE
ROARING 20’S
AMERICAN HISTORY
FROM THE ROARING 20’S TO THE GREAT DEPRESSION
AN AMERICAN JOURNAL

OBJECTIVE:  STUDENTS WILL BE ABLE TO DEMONSTRATE KNOWLEDGE OF THIS
TIME PERIOD BY MAKING JOURNAL ENTRIES WHICH GIVE RELEVANT FACTS, AND
THOUGHTFUL OPINIONS ABOUT THE EVENTS, POLITICS, AND CHANGES WHICH TOOK
PLACE DURING THIS TIME PERIOD. (COMPETENCY #3)

DIRECTIONS:  AFTER HAVING READ, DONE STUDY GUIDES, HAD ACTIVITIES,
DISCUSSION, AND WATCHED A MOVIE, YOU ARE TO USE YOUR IMAGINATION,
KNOWLEDGE, AND ANOTHER RESOURCES TO MAKE A JOURNAL OR DIARY AS IF YOU
LIVED DURING THIS TIME PERIOD.  THIS JOURNAL SHOULD INCLUDE THE
FOLLOWING:

1.  CREATE AN IDENTITY- ARE YOU A FARMER?  A CITY DWELLER WHO WORKS IN
ONE OF HENRY FORD’S AUTOMOBILE FACTORIES?  MAYBE YOU ARE A WEALTHY
STOCKBROKER WORKING ON WALL STREET.  YOU MIGHT LIVE IN RURAL AMERICA
AND BE SHOCKED BY ALL THE CHANGE OF THIS TIME PERIOD.  WHERE DO YOU
LIVE?  ARE YOU A REPUBLICAN WHO BELIEVES IN BIG BUSINESS OR A DEMOCRAT
WHO THINKS THE COMMON MAN NEEDS A BREAK?  THESE ARE JUST A FEW THINGS
TO CONSIDER IN CREATING YOUR IDENTITY?

2.  TECHNOLOGY AND INVENTIONS; CHANGE-  YOUR JOURNAL SHOULD INCLUDE
EXAMPLES OF AT LEAST 10 CHANGES, INVENTIONS AND DEVELOPMENTS WHICH
MARK THIS ERA PLUS YOUR OPINION OF THEM AND SOME EXPLANATION OF HOW
THEY CHANGED PEOPLES LIVES.

3.  HISTORICAL EVENTS-  YOUR JOURNAL SHOULD INCLUDE MENTION OF AT LEAST
10 EVENTS, INCLUDING ACCURATE DATES, INFORMATION, AND HOW THEY
IMPACTED PEOPLES LIVES.

4.  PROHIBITION-  YOUR JOURNAL SHOULD EXPLAIN WHAT PROHIBITION IS AND
HOW IT AFFECTED THE COUNTRY AND YOUR OPINION OF IT.

5.  POLITICS-  YOUR JOURNAL ENTRIES SHOULD DEMONSTRATE A KNOWLEDGE OF
THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN REPUBLICANS AND PROGRESSIVES AND EXPLAIN
WHERE YOU STAND POLITICALLY. 

6.  PRESIDENTS-  YOU SHOULD INCLUDE AT LEAST 3 FACTS ABOUT EACH
PRESIDENT(HARDING, COOLIDGE, HOOVER, FDR)  AND CHOOSE THE ONE WHICH
YOU THOUGHT WAS BEST.

7.  SOCIETY AND LIFESTYLE OF THE 20’S-  YOU SHOULD CAPTURE THE FAST PACE
AND PROSPERITY OF THE 1920’S AND DISCUSS AT LEAST 3 NEW FORMS OF
ENTERTAINMENT.

8.  THE STOCK MARKET CRASH OF ‘29 AND THE GREAT DEPRESSION-  YOUR
JOURNAL SHOULD DETAIL THE EVENTS WHICH CAUSED THE CRASH AND WHICH
KEPT THE COUNTRY IN A DEPRESSION.  YOU SHOULD LIST AT LEAST 5 CAUSES FOR
THE DEPRESSION.

9.  THE NEW DEAL-  IT SHOULD BE CLEAR FROM THE ENTRIES IN YOUR JOURNAL
THAT YOU UNDERSTAND THE AIM OF THE NEW DEAL.  YOU SHOULD BE ABLE TO
EXPLAIN HOW AT LEAST 3 NEW DEAL PROGRAMS AFFECTED THE COUNTRY AND
HOW ONE OF THEM PLAYED A ROLE IN YOUR OWN LIFE.

10.  15 ENTRIES-  FOR CONTINUITY AND TO GIVE YOU TIME TO DEVELOP YOUR
CHARACTER, THERE SHOULD BE AT LEAST 15 DIFFERENT ENTRIES AND DATES.
EACH ENTRY SHOULD BE NEAT, AS CREATIVE AS POSSIBLE, AND ACCURATE.

JOURNAL COVER

1. MUST HAVE A TITLE THAT CAPTURES THE UNIQUE QUALITY OF THE TIMES AS WELL
AS YOUR OWN IMAGINARY LIFE.

2.  A TIMELINE WITH AT LEAST 10 EVENTS

3.  A DRAWING OR PICTURE OF ONE OF THE INVENTIONS WHICH YOU BELIEVE
GREATLY CHANGED THE WORLD

4.   A DRAWING OR PICTURE OF YOUR FAVORITE PRESIDENT OR EVENT FROM THE
ERA.

5.  IT SHOULD BE NEAT AND COLORFUL
