We hope you and your family had a great winter holiday. Now that we are into our second semester, we are encouraging the children to work more independently so that they will be prepared for second grade. We are really working on reading comprehension. Your first grader is being required to do more silent reading. At home have your child read something silently, then ask them questions to check for comprehension. This skill takes lots of practice.

We can't believe the 100th day of school is just around the corner! You will be getting more information on the activities that are planned for that day. The 100th day is January 24, 2000. First grade will be doing a unit on penguins. We will learn many interesting facts as well as songs and poems about these strange birds. Ask your child what a baby penguin is called. This is always a fun unit for the students.

Please help your child memorize their addition and subtraction facts to 10. Also, check to see if your child can count to 100 by 2's, 5's and 10's. This is an important skill when we do our unit on money.

We would like to welcome the following students to Winborn:
Courtney Nickell, Travis Thornhill, Kaitlyn Majewski, Elizabeth Shapiro, Johanna Hensley, and Justice Mora. We are thrilled to have Mrs. Terri Runge as our newest teacher of the first grade team.
