GERONTOLOGY

Gerontology is the study of growing old. Aging is a normal condition of human existence. Currently approximately 12% of the population is older than 65. By the year 2030, approximately 20% of the population will be older than 65. This "Graying of America" will continue to increase as the baby boomers become older.
The fact is that everyone MUST age. The changes physiologically are not or necessarily inevitable and the changes are often very compatible with many interventions and treatments. This process of aging affects the individual, the family and society at large.
Below are listed some of the age related factors influencing care of the geriatric individual:

* Frequent absence of social and financial support {i.e. deceased spouse, inadequate income to maintain pre-retirement standard of living}.
* Presence of significiant concurrent illness {i.e. dementia, CHF, COPD}.
* Impared mobility {dependent on walkers, need for bed transfer, degenerative joint disease}.
*Impaired equilibrium, resulting in falls.

How an individual responds to these changes is related to the person's psychological makeup. Successful aging depends on the individual's capability to cope with life changes.

Physiological Status:

**Musculoskeletal system deterioration leads to decreased strength, endurance, and range of motion.

**Reduced speed of neural transmission impairs mental processing, proprioception, and coordination.

**Continued decline in cardiac and respiratory systems leads to decreased cardiac output and vital capacity.

**Demineralization of bone occurs more frequently and is generally more severe in post-menopausal women, causing osteoporosis and risk of fractures.

Cognitive Status:

**Cognitive functioning appears to be related to use, not using cognitive function decreases its efficiency.

**The capacity for adaptation decreases.

** Thinking becomes slower, but the elderely can learn.
