Class Newsletter

February 10, 2002

Dear Parents,

It has been a long time since we have communicated.  So much is going on that I feel a necessity to let you know what is happening.  Time is moving so quickly and it is hard to believe that we are passed the mid-point of the school year.

We still have our student practicum teacher.  Mrs. Hover will be here through March, although that is fast approaching also.  She has enriched our class with her  innovative ideas, and her soft approach with the children.  We will certainly have many happy memories when she leaves to do her formal student teaching.

In Math we are learning about fractions and will be approaching probability.  Fractions are a difficult concept for the children to grasp.  Once they understand this, it will become easy for them.  You must remember that the program that we are using, EVERYDAY MATH, is a spiral.  What is learned one year is repeated and built upon in the next year.  In fact as the year advances there is constant practice in what we do whenever we do the Math Boxes in our Math Journal.

In Reading we are involved in the theme unit EARTH PATROL.  the stories and activities that we use are about conservation and taking care of our Earth.  At present we have read Indian Legends and the children are making Story Wheels for presentation to the class.  When they are finished, we will publish them on the Web.  We have finished reading MISTY OF CHINCOTEAGUE.  We also watched the movie. This has deepened our understanding of the Middle Atlantic States, and also   integrates with our reading theme.

In Science we have finished our study of SMALL THINGS such as plant cells and one-celled animals.  At present we are integrating into our EARTH PATROL theme, by performing experiments to understand the effects of pollution.
In Social Studies we are finishing up the region of THE MIDDLE ATLANTIC STATES and soon will be exploring the SOUTHEASTERN STATES.  We use the text, supplementary materials, and the Internet.
For Language Arts we are studying NOUNS and developing our Expository Writing skills.  We are emphasizing THREE FACTS and at least ONE DETAIL for each fact.
In Spelling we integrate with Reading, Language Arts, and Social Studies.

I will keep you posted as to the activities we are engaged in as time goes on.  Have a happy and healthy month.
Sincerely,
Lori Kandl
