Pelé (EDSON ARANTES DO NASCIMENTO) was born on October 23, 1940, in a small village Tres Corocoes, in the Brazilian state of Minas Gerais. He spent his childhood in the city of Bauru, the state of Sao Paulo. His father, Joao Ramos do Nascimento, was well-known in the soccer world as one of the leading players of his time, however he retired prematuredly due to an injury.
Pele starting playing soccer in the open space behind his house at a very young age. Pele’s soccer ball was then a round bundle of rags that were held together by strings.
Once, when he was playing with some Turkish children he
tried to stop the ball with his hand instead of his foot. This glaring mistake earned him the name Pe-Le. ‘Pe’
means ‘foot’ and ‘Le’ means ‘fool’.
In 1956 he came to Santos where his trainer was Waldemar de Brito. Two years later, when he was only seventeen years old, he was awarded the World Cup winner's medal. And you all know what happened after that. Pelé became the greatest athlete in the world and most talented of all soccer players. Up until now he has broken all the records in soccer and if all his successes were written down they would fill an encyclopedia.
