We are now studying Chapter 8...The Colonization of Texas

Historical Focus:  The vast reaches of Texas attracted land-hungry settlers from the United States and other countries.  Between 1821 and 1835, thousands of people came to Texas to make a new life.

1821 Spain approves Moses Austin's colonization plan
1821 Mexico gains independence from Spain
1822 Stephen F. Austin brings first colonists to Texas
1825 Green DeWitt establishes a colony near Austin
1825 Martin de Leon and his wife settle the town of Victoria

Focus:  Moses Austin and his son Stephen F. Austin bring about the largest settlement in Texas.

Multicultural Moment:
Did you know....Few enslaved African Americans lived in Texas before the arrival of settlers from the United States. The first reliable census in 1777 listed 20 African Americans, most of whom were probably enslaved.  Another census in 1785 listed 43 enslaved people.
