The fourth six weeks saw the end of the Texas Bluebonnet Award reading incentive in the library. 145 third, fourth and fifth graders  were eligible to vote for their favorite book.  Twelve of our students received a hardback copy of one of next year’s nominees, Home Run by Robert Burleigh,  from the PTO in recognition of reading all 20 of the books, and 27 other students received a certificate for reading 10 or more of the nominees.  The winner from our school was the novel, The Ghost from Fossil Glen by Cynthia DeFelice.  The books for next year’s award are beginning to arrive at the library and students are already busy preparing for the voting in January of 2001.

February 2, 2000 the information on the Read to Succeed - 600 Minute Reading Club was sent home.   Students who read 600 minutes and record their time on the Reading Tally sheets will receive a ticket to any of the Six Flags amusement parks including our own Astroworld. If your child needs more space for recording his/her reading, please ask them to come by the library for additional sheets.  This reading program ends on March 15 and must be postmarked by March 17, therefore no late entries will be accepted.

Fifth graders have just completed using electronic encyclopedias (online or stand alone CD’s ) to research information for a biographical poem.  These poems were then word processed and will be on display during Open House in March.  Fourth graders have been studying examples of various literary devices that they can use in their own writing.  They will begin to work on research during the fifth six weeks. Third graders are about to begin their first Big 6 project for the year, while second and first graders are just finishing up their group research projects.

Please encourage your student to continue to read on a daily basis.  Remember that the library is open before and after school on Mondays and Thursdays at 7:40 AM and until 3:10 PM.  Your child is welcome to take advantage of this time to read, research or take accelerated reader tests.  As always, please feel free to call if you have any questions about any of the programs in the library.
