Welcome to the homepage of the
Luray Chess Kings
The Luray Chess Club is free and open to anyone in Luray Elementary School. High school students and home-schooled students have joined us as guests from time to time.
We meet every Thursday from 3:20 to 4:30.
Meeting usually begin in Mr. Mack's room with attendance, tournament announcements, and strategy lessons. Then we usually move to the cafeteria to play chess.
Adults are welcome to join us. The students love to play against adults, win or lose.
Beginners learn mostly by playing. I do have a selection of videos and books that teach all the rules and may be borrowed anytime.
All chess club members should put Jan. 13, 2001 on your calendar. That's the date of the annual Student versus Adult chess tournament. This tournament is free. Come to the cafeteria that Saturday morning at 8:30. Games should start about 9:00 and we should be finished around noon. Refreshments for all and prizes for the kids.
I always have more students than adults for this event, so all chess-playing adults out there should definitely come. You don't have to be any good, just as long as you know how to play. This is a great introduction to tournament play for beginners, and a lot of fun for everyone.
We go to rated tournaments about once a month. For a schedule, to register on-line, or to play chess, click on the spotsychessclub link at the bottom.

The Shenandoah Valley Chess Club, an adult chess club, meets every Friday night in Harrisonburg. Find out the details at the SVCC link below.
Chess players can also meet on the first Saturday morning of every month at 8:30 am, at A Moment To Remember Restaurant on Main St., downtown Luray. Adults of all skill levels and children accompanied by adults are welcome to eat breakfast and drink coffee over a chess board.
