Eligible to work in the United States?Yes I have letter of eligibility for employment to teach English and Spanish in NH. I have recently received a letter from a student which stated my strengths. In his 3 years with me as a Spanish student, with a learning disability, he learned how to study from me. The units I teach involve the Understanding By Design model of backwards design and include a bigger question. All of my students experience a unit on how we learn best. They complete various assignments that target different learning styles and evaluate which taught them the most. Over the years I have purchased many of my own materials. Because I am interested in the bigger question ideas, I have purchased literature in bilingual format to ensure the students experienced plenty of Spanish, and read the text for meaning for the bigger question contemplation. My favorite curriculum includes beginning the year with the ancient civilizations around the world and looking at some of the literature passed down from them. We also look at the earliest form of communications and attempt to communicate with one another using some of these forms. From there we study the Roman empire and look at how latin has been incorporated into our languages, doing an in depth study of prefixes and suffixes and roots for meaning. A game of Balderdash following this unit allows us to see how studying Latin would help us understand the romance languages. We then move to the study of ballads and look at some of the famous ballads, like El Cid, and investigate whether or not the ballad is still used. Students are led to find a ballad format in popular music. El Cid is also an epic, the discussion of epics ensues as does the more interesting conversation of how religion continues to be an influence in war. Picturesque literature follows with, Lazarillo, and a discussion of how government plays a role in the lives of society. A research paper is written on a country of their choice during the same time period to discover the influence of government. Don Quixote comes into the picture with the great question of the definition of insanity. Students then write a one act script based on their favorite episode in the peices of the literature read. Explorers are then studied and students become an explorer of their choice keeping a diary of their adventures. Students contemplate how language is influenced by the introduction of other cultures and create some new words to use around the school to assist them in discovering whether or not a new "language" would influence their culture. Students read the children's book, Josefina, and write their own children's book inspired by the development of the area of the world their explorer "discovered". Research is required to a great degree for this work. Students play the board game, Puerto Rico, which allows them to become key figures in the development of a colony and plan a speech for one of the political offices. Students play the board game, Eurorail, and decide where and what type of transportation would be best in the colony they have created. Students complete and author study of Jimenez, and prepare for a debate about the immigration issue. Students read the young adult book, Naomi Leon, and write a short story for the same age audience about an issue they believe fits that audience. They must speak with authorities on the topic to ensure their writing will include valuable insight for their audience. They read, The Lorax, and study an environmental question of their choice on which they then must create a children's story. Reading literature from other cultures allows for cooking, dancing or exploring music or art. I am interested in a teaching position with your district that incorporates teacher written, integrated, cross curricular, backwards design, standard based units. My greatest achievement to date includes the development and delivery of such units. Teacher written curriculum is delivered with great enthusiasm. Whatever the goals of your school , it is the presentation of units that inspires the student and raises their learning achievements. I would like to be associated with a district where communications with parents is a high priority. I enjoy writing reports to parents about what was coming up in class. In my class room you may see a relay race, internet games, role plays or writing activities. Within the class room it is important for me as the teacher to awaken the interest from the students and show them I care. That care begins before they walk into the room. My ''discipline'' policy includes a positive reinforcement goal. I strive to always meet the students with a positive statement prior to allowing myself to direct or correct. Meeting students in the hall prior to entering class allows me to offer a ''Good Morning'', at least, prior to asking for homework, which may not be completed. Skillful Teacher techniques are spotted daily in my classroom arena. Résumé Mary Morrison PO Box 212, East Corinth, Vermont 05040 802-522-0899 - senoramaria2@yahoo.com Education Excelsior College Albany, New York, Vermont Bachelor of Science Major: Liberal Arts Minor: English/Spanish GPA: 3.250 January 2003 to October 2005 Ohio University - Southern Athens, Ohio College Coursework - no degree Major: English May 2006 to Present Experience Hazen Union School Spanish Teacher Hardwick, Vermont Aug 2007 - Jun 2010 I taught a 7th grade FLEX introducing Spanish as a possibility for their future language learning at Hazen. I teach all levels of High School Spanish as well. This program is in its 3rd year at Hazen and development of the levels has been my priority. In April 2008, I traveled with a group of 32 teens to Spain, Italy and France to experience the culture of the three languages they study at Hazen. Reading and Writing across the curriculum is a high priority in my plans. Students are required to read four books by Spanish authors or about Spanish speaking countries. Depending on the needs at the school, these books may be targeted to the same author, or different genres that need to be explored to meet State requirements. The current GCE's encompass specific Vital Results to be targeted with foreign language and I strive to meet these vital results in my units. Students are aware of the reason for their inclusion and keep track of their own learning on our "accomplishments" wall. In this way, students feel they are growing with each assignment. Spanish is spoken by students each day in class, at least one day a week it is the only language spoken. Reading, Writing and Listening are also targeted each day. The Vital Results and cultural experiences are found within each unit which normally encompasses a month of study. Reason for leaving: Though I am extremely happy at Hazen, I am concerned that my current position will not always be a full time position. Hazen is 47 miles from my home. It is not economically sound to take a chance on the position becoming part time in the future. Mary is one of the most outstanding teachers I have known in my 27 years as a counselor. She prepares thoroughly for her classes and creates amazing lessons. this year she has been teaching an independent social studies class to our one ELL student who is from Mexico. Mary volunteered to take on this task, and her lesson plans and materials are models of good practice. All of her classes are filled with energy and fun. At the same time, she requires hard work and intellectually challenges her students. Mary has an extraordinary rapport with her students. she is often the first teacher to notice signs of learning disabilities or emotional problems, and she brings them to my attention so that her students can get help. Mary's ability to connect with students helps to motivate them and make them feel comfortable to stay after school to work on their Spanish. Mary stays after school several hours each day for this purpose. My job frequently involves calling parents when their children are struggling with school. Mary makes my job easier, because she calls parents herself whenever she has concerns aobut her students. She also fills out referral forms for our Educational support Team that give detailed information about the students she has identified as needing help. As you can see from this letter, Mary is the best. I recommend her to you as a treasure who will bring wonderful gifts to your school and to your students. Mary has taught Sp[anish at Wellspring School this past year and has substitute taught many times in grades one through eight. She has presented lessons in my seventh and eighth grade class on European geography based on her extensive travel in Eastern Europe. I have also worked collegially with Mary on the faculty at the administrative level. I have observed Mary's teaching through out peer evaluation process. Mary brings many strengths to her teaching. She is exceptionally well prepared and makes extensive lesson plans well in advance. Her lessons are well though out, bringing a range of activities to suit a variety of learning styles. In the Spanish class I observed she began with conversation and drills in spanish. this was followed by the students participatiing in a sports panel game in Spanish, using Hispanic sports figures, which they had developed based ona structure provided by the teacher. The students were focused and engaged, both in their enjoyment of the activity and in the use of the Spanish language. In the latst third of the class the students worked insmall groups developing the next stage of the game. The students in my seventh and eighth grade class love Spanish and are learning a great deal about Spanish culture through cooking, singing, and drama, as well as learning the fundamentals of the language. they agree that Senora Maria is the best leanguage teacher they have had in their eight years of school. In addition to her strength in curriculum. Mary has a natural gift for class management. she sets very clear limits for studnets and is cheerful and respectful in helping students adhere to these limits. she cares deeply about her students and they perceive heras fair and kind in the classroom. she deals well with parents in finding constructive ways for all students to participate. collegially Mary is easy to work with. She has extensive experience working in groups. She offers creative and clear solutions, asks for clarification on difficult points, and, in general, moves discussion along in a helpful way. She offers suggestions freely and is not attache3d to her point of view prevailing. She is flexible and works well as a team member. Mary will be a great addition to any shcool. Not only will she bring valuable experience and maturity to her position, she will bring the dedication and enthusiasm of a new teacher. We are very sad to lose her at our school and we are loosing her only because we cannot offer her the full time position that she needs. I can recommend Mary without reservation. Please feel free to call me to further discuss her application. Sincerely, Judy Tharinger, M. I have known Mary as a peer for about a year and a half. I am a Special Educator at the high school level. Most of my students have learning disabilities that interfere with their performance in regular classes. Becaouse of the excellent experiences both my students and I have had with Mary, I highly recommend her for a teaching position in your district. In the first place, Mary is a creative and innovative teacher. I began to know her because as a special educator, I remain at school for meetings and paperwork long after others leave. I soon found that Mary was usually in her room as long and often longer than I was. She made it a point to see me frequently to discuss students we had in common. During our discussions, Mary was always flexible in her approach to individual needs and very creative in her ability to adjust her teaching strategies to include skills that might need to be reinforced for individual students. In the end, she would come up with a plan that would provide multi-sensory experiences for theentire class so that every student would benefit and no one would be singled out. This sensitivity increased student success and made discipline issues a non-issue in Mary's room. In addition, Mary developed exciting learning activities for her students. I remember one activity tht culminated ina community of multiple stores from different countries, selling many products in specific currencies. Students were furnished wiht a shopping list and were required to purchase specific items, in specific currencies, calculating what their exact change should be using only Spanish to communicate. this was a challenging, realistic, hands-on experience that was also enjoyable for her students. These types of successful activities are possible because Mary is a very reflective teacher and is not hesitant to accurately assess her interactions with an individual, a class or of her lesson plans. IN fact, this is just part of her normal functioning. If she finds a lesson needs to be tweaked or changed, or that a student needs to be approached in a different manner, Mary makes the correction and assesses again. Consequently, her teaching never becomes "stale" and her students feel special and appreciated. I could go on and on about Mary but I'm going to close by saying that my observations and appreciation of her were shared by other faculty members as well. As a result, we voted Mary "Teacher of the Year" for the 04-05 school year. I've been here for twently-five years and I've never seen that happen to a first year teacher. If that many people notice, then something good is going on in teaching. I highly recommend Mary. I doubt if you can find better. As a Special Education Teacher she and I have wroked together to provide students with learning disabilities (often with emotional and or behavioral conponents) access to and success in spanish language classes. Mary is outstanding to work with. She desires that all students succeed and is more than willing to provide accommodations. She works with the student's education plan and readily shares suggestions, feedback, and the student's successes and concerns. It has been a pleasure working with her. Mary takes a personal interest in her students. She establishes clear expectations, listens to student needs, and is responsive to student learning. She is comprehensive in her instruction of Spanish language and through classroom management allows students to prioritize time reflecting real life situations. Mary offers a variety of presentation methods. She uses technology to teach, reinforce and provide practice by putting on a web site games, sample quizzes for students to access on their own time often at home. She takes her teaching seriously. Her students in my experience would rate her as excellent. She is available before, during and after school to answer questions. She works along with the student in making progress as opposed to providing instruction and then sitting back to offer passing or failing grades. She offered step by step assistance to a student not enrolled in her classes to complete a technical career center program project and built his presentation into her classes. This is just one example among many of Mary's superior skills and admirable work ethic. It is these qualities that cause me to expecially recommend her to your shcool/program/employment. I have observed her in both the sixth and seventh grade settings. Mary is well-suited to teach either upper elementary or middle school. She demonstrates a strong understanding of the needs of this age group in both her instructional practice and her classroom management. Her classes were lively while providing an atmosphere conducive to learning. Mary rarely had any discipline problems, which is a credit to her ability to develop clear expectations around behavior. Mary spoke Spanish almost the entire time in her sixth grade classes. Her students responded well to this immersion. Mary has written excellent units for her studies. She has been using the Understanding By Design model for u8nit design. In the classes I observed, students were working on some basic Spanish questions and responses. In all classes, Mary had students working in a variety of formates: individual, pairs and groups. Mary kept the momentum going aned the studnets wrere consistently engaged. She checked for understanding throughout her lessons, at one point in time using a relay team format to review parts of speech. Mary is a dedicated instructor who is often found after school spending extra hours preparing for the following day or reviewing student work. She has stayed in constant contact with parents, sending home a letter to introduce new units or addressing specific concerns. Mary is very eager and ready to become a full-time teacher.
