Study Guides and Strategies

Grades are merely snapshots of your child’s performance at school. There is so much more to a middle-school age student than can be reflected in a report card. The Grades web page is updated weekly on Tuesday and includes overall grade, category grades, and individual grades. Absences reflect that a student was not in my class and does not distinguish between excused and unexcused absences.

5th and 6th Grade Math Expectations
Homework

Homework is generally assigned every weeknight. Each homework assignment is worth 5 points. Students who satisfy the assignment's requirements receive 5 points. The following are reasons why a Homework Assignments might earn less than 5 points are:
-1 point if the student fails to have their name on the paper.
-1 point if the student fails to have the date on the paper.
-1 point if the student fails to have the assignment written at the top of the paper.
-1 point if the student uses ink to complete their Math homework.
-1 point if the student fails to attempt five to one problems. (If the assignment was 25 problems and they attempted 20, 21, 22, 23, or 24 problems.)
-2 points if the student fails to attempt more than five problems. (If the assignment was 25 problems and they did 19 problems or less.
-2 points if the student fails to show ANY work.

Problem of the Day(POTD)

Monday through Thursday the students are to copy a POTD into their POTD notebook. Generally we will go over these in class. Students are to show these to their parents and have them signed. On Friday these are checked for signatures. If a students is absent they are to ask a classmate for this information. Bringing the notebook to Math class on Monday is worth one point, and each problem signed for that week is worth one point.

Weekly Progress Reports

Every Friday your child will receive a Weekly Progress Report, which will include Homework, POTDs, Class Fouls, and comments if needed. Generally, on the back I will include other relative school information. Students are to bring these home over the weekend and return them signed on Monday. The homework assignments that are circled can be redone for partial credit if turned in on Monday.(Effective 12/5) I will no longer call home for Progress Reports that were not returned to school on Monday. It is the student's responsibility to bring this home to you, and the parent's to ask for it on Friday. If I do not send a Prog. Rep. home one week, I WILL send home a note home with every child saying that there were none sent home this week. A signed P.R. on Monday is worth 5 points. YEAH!
