Geography Project and worksheets
The MCAS were a long two weeks and are finally over for this year. Your children all tried their best.
The children are working on a geography project, “Planning A Trip”, that will take them through the United States to a destination of their choosing. They will gather information about various states, using maps and mathematics. They will plan a round trip itinerary by car that can take up to 21 days. Please see their directions for this part. This project also requires a map of the ‘state of destination’. The map can be drawn and illustrated or a relief map. It must include the capitol and any major geographic features, and a fact panel. The children have been shown what a fact panel is and ideas for their map. We have gone over how to figure out distance traveled and miles per hour to know how long it takes to get from one point to another. Research tools must include a road map of the United States and can include resources from the Internet. I have added some links to my list of links that can be a help. The children are very excited about this project, and I know they will learn will doing this.
We are reading a book by Natalie Babbitt called Search For Delicious, which is a High Fantasy Hero genre. They are watching character development and making connections with other books of this genre.
They will be writing a letter to “Dear Fifth Grade Teacher” telling about himself or herself to their next year’s teacher.
It’s hard to believe that this year is almost over. It will be difficult for me to say good-bye to this class.
