Welcome to Spanish, Level I!

Goals:
 
    Students will develop basic speaking skills, with proper pronunciation, intonation, listening comprehension skills, reading skills and writing skills on a variety of topics.  Contextual vocabulary and grammar skills will be mastered.  Culture, history, geography and literature are interwoven into the curriculum in a manner as to enhance the building and acquisition of language skills in Spanish.

Expectations:

A) Punctuality; Students must come to class on time. Students arriving to class late must bring a pass.

B) Active pariticapation; Students are strongly encouraged to engage in class activities and take part in all speaking exercises during class. This will serve to be most beneficial, as students will be evaluated on their speaking abilities in Spanish.

C) Preparedness; Students must come to class with books, notebook, folder, writing paper, and pen/pencil. Students are expected to complete their work and assignments on time. Assignments may take the form of review and study, or it may be in the form of a specific written assignment or project.  

D) Appropriate conduct; Students are advised to follow classroom rules, as well as the Park School Code of Conduct and the Park School Behavior Standards. [See Park School Planner.] Students must show respect for themselves, fellow classmates, and the teacher at all times.

E) Risk-taking; Practice makes perfect. Students musty be willing to make mistakes and learn from them. Only by expressing his/her thoughts, will a student be able to perfect his/her language skills.

Classroom Rules:

1. No food (including candy), drinks, or gum chewing in the classroom.
2. No unnecessary talking or communicating with others during class.
3. No hats are to be worn during class.
4. Raise your hand to speak in class.
5. Students must visit the lavatory before the start of class.

Grading:

      A quarterly grade will be determined based on grades from quizzes, tests, listening activities, grammar exercises, essays, presentations, skits, and projects. The breakdown of the quarterly grade is as follows:
25% Reading/Writing Skills
25% Speaking Skills
25% Listening Skills
25% Class Participation/Preparation

WHAT WILL STUDENTS BE LEARNING IN TODAY'S CLASS?

18 diciembre 2000

SPA II -- Students completed a quiz on sentence translations written in Spanish incorporating past and present vocabulary and the irregular -ar preterite "yo" forms of the verbs highlighted in Chapter 11.  For homework, students were assigned to complete textbook exercises A and B on page 309.  Responses must be written using complete sentences.


SPA IA (4) -- A review of simple adjective agreement took place and students were introduced to complex adjective agreement in the language.  As guided practice, students were asked to translate a series of sentences incorporating complex adjective agreement, the chapter vocabulary and conjugations of the verb "ser".  Workbook page 1 was also completed as group work.  For homework, students were asked to complete page 2 of their workbook and to study their notes on the verb "ser" and complex adjective agreement.


SPA IA (6) --  For review for tomorrow's quiz, textbook exercises 42 B and 43 C were reviewed in written form for the class.  Students were also advised of the format of the quiz and were given sample quiz questions orally as added practice.  Students were asked to review these exercises for homework and study their class notes on the plural forms of the verb "ser" and adjective agreement.

SPA IB (2) and (5)-- Students were given a quiz centering on the Chapter 5 vocabulary, the verb "tener", and the constructions of "have to..." ("tener" que...)and "going to..." ("ir" a...).  For the remainder of the class period, students were asked to explore websites on holiday expressions.  [See Useful Link below.]


SPA IA (6) -- Students were quizzed on their knowledge/comprehension of "ser", Ch 2 vocabulary and agreement in class today.  Students were granted the remainder of the period to read and/or visit other students in the class.

3 enero 2001

SPA IB (2) and (5) -- Students were informed of the upcoming cumulative examination scheduled for the week of Jan. 16th, and were given the date of the exam review session, Jan 10th.  Students worked on Chapter 6 listening activities during class.  Students in SPA IB (2) were asked to complete workbook pages 55-57 for homework.  Students in SPA IB (5) were asked to read the "conversacion" on textbook page 168, and write out the English translation, along with their responses to the questions that follow using complete sentences.


SPA II -- Students were informed of the upcoming cumulative examination scheduled for the week of Jan 16th, and were given the date of the the exam review session, Jan. 11th.  Students worked on Chapter 11 listening activities for the remainder of the class.  For homework, students were assigned to read, translate and answer the "conversacion" questions on page 310 of their textbook and write a 10-sentence paragraph incorporating the preterite tense describing what they did on holiday break.


SPA IA (6) -- Students were informed of the upcoming cumulative examination scheduled for the week of Jan 16th, and were given the date of the exam review session, Jan. 8th.  For the remainder of the class period, students worked on Chapter 2 listening activities.  Students were assigned to read the "conversacion" on textbook page 54, and write out the English translation of the dialogue, along with their responses to the questions that follow using complete sentences.


4 enero 2001

SPA IB(2) -- Cumulative Test dates were announced to the class.  The Listening Test and In-class Essay will be given on Tuesday, January 16th.  The Reading Comprehension and Writing Test will be given on Friday, January 19th.  Workbook pages 56 and 57 were reviewed as a class.  Students were assigned the following workbook exercises for homework: 59D, 60 E&F and 63.


SPA IB (5) -- Cumulative Test dates were announced to the class.  The Reading Comprehension and Writing Test will take place on Tuesday, January 19th.  The Listening Test and In-class Essay will be given on Thursday, January 18th.  More Chapter 6 listening activities were administered in class today.  Students were also given time to begin the day's homework: workbook pages 57 & 63.


5 enero 2001


SPA IB (2) -- Workbook pages 59 (exercise D) and 60 (all) were reviewed today.  Class discussion/lecture centered on the application of possessive adjectives in context.  As guided practice, workbook exercises G and H on page 61 was completed as a class.  Students were asked to review their responses for pg 60 F and make any revisions necessary to their responses, and complete workbook exercise 61 I and textbook exercise 166 D.


II --  Preterite paragraph and completed work for textbook exercises 309 and 310 were collected and reviewed.  The topic of Direct Object Pronouns (for objects already mentioned) were presented to the class.  Textbook page 307 was reviewed.  Students were asked to complete workbook exercise 113G and 114H for homework.


IA (4) -- A review of subject pronouns, "ser", and simple and complex adjective agreement took place.  Workbook exercises B & C on page 2 were reviewed.  For homework, students were asked to complete workbook exercises 2 D&E,
3F, and all exercises on workbook page 5.


IA (6) -- Translation and responses to "Conversacion" on textbook page 54 were collected and reviewed.  For homework, students were asked to complete textbook exercise 53 B.



8 enero 2001

SPA II (3) -- A review of direct object pronouns for objects previously mentioned took place.  Workbook pages 113-114 were reviewed as a class.  Students were asked to study their notes and their completed exercises on the topic for a quiz next class.  Students' "paragraphs" describing what they did on their holiday break were also turned back to them for revision/correction.


SPA IA (4) -- Workbook exercises 2 D&E, 3F and all exercises on page 5 were reviewed.  Today's class emphasized on simple and complex adjective agreement in the written form, along with asking questions in Spanish.  For homework, students were instructed to study the verb "ser", subject pronouns, adjective agreement and the question words for a quiz on Thursday.


SPA IB (5) -- Workbook page 63 was reviewed.  This page challenged the students' reading comprehension abilities in the language.  Students were also engaged in a Total Physical Response exercise in which they were asked to draw what was stated aloud in Spanish.  For homework, students were asked to translate the cultural reading on textbook page 170 and complete exercise B (at the top of the page) and exercises A, B and C (at the  bottom of the page).


SPA IA (6) -- Today's class centered on listening activities.  Student Tape Manual exercises 192A and all of 193 were conducted in class.  Students were asked to begin studying for the cumulative test next week.


9 enero 2001

SPA IB (2) -- Workbook exercises 60F and 61I were reviewed.  Class discussion centered on a review of possessive adjectives.  For homework, students were asked to translate the conversation on textbook page 168 to English and answer the questions that follow using complete sentences.

SPA IB (5) -- Today's class centered on listening activities.  Student Tape Manual pages 214D - 215 were completed.  For homework, students were asked to study their class notes, along with textbook and workbook exercises centering on possessive adjectives for a quiz next class.

SPA IA (6) -- Textbook exercises 51 D and C were completed in pairs and reviewed as a class.  The remainder of class centered on introducing the structures of "Time" to the class.  A handout was given to the students.  Students were asked to complete pages 84-87(top) for homework.


10 enero 2001

SPA IB (2)-- Reading comprehension passsages from workbook pages 63 and 65 were reviewed in class today. The implementation of reading strategies was discussed.  For homework, students were asked to translate the cultural reading from textbook page 170 and complete the text exercises 171 B (top) and ABC (at bottom).


SPA II (3) -- Students were tested on the knowledge and application of spanish direct object pronouns and the preterite forms of the verb "ir" and "ser" in class today.  As a class, students also translated the cultural reading from textbook page 312 and were asked to complete all the exercises on page 313 for homework.


SPA IB (5) -- Students were quizzed on their knowledge and application of the chapter vocabulary centering on the family and the spanish possessive adjectives.  Textbook pages 170-171 were reviewed as a class.  For homework, students were asked to complete workbook pages 62 and 64.


11 enero 2001


SPA II (3)-- Textbook exercises on page 313 were reviewed in preparation for the up-coming cumulative test.  Additional cultural pages were also reviewed as a class to assist students in their studies.  Students were assigned workbook pages 115-117.


SPA IA (4) -- Students were quizzed on their knowledge and application of the verb "ser", adjective agreement, and the chapter's vocabulary.  Today's class focussed on the oral pronunciation of the chapter vocabulary, along with the responding to a set of exercises in the oral form. Textbook exercises 20 B&C and exercises on pages 22 & 23 were reviewed.  For homework, students were asked to tranlate the conversation featured on textbook 26C, complete texbook exercise 27H, along with workbook exercises on page 4 and page 7J.


SPA IA (6) -- Students completed their studies on time today.  Students learned how to express the hour and minutes beyond 30 using the "menos" construction.  All exercises from the time packet were reviewed orally.  Students were assigned the cultural reading exercises from the textbook pages 56-57.  Students were asked to translate the reading to English, and complete the exercises that follow.


12 enero 2001


SPA IB (2)-- Students were quizzed on their knowledge of possessive adjectives in context with the chapter's vocabulary.  The textbook culture pages 170-175 were also reviewed in preparation for next week's cumulative test.  No written homework was given.

SPA II (3) -- Workbook pages 115-118 were reviewed in class today, emphasizing reading comprehension skills in the language.  Students were given no homework, but to prepare for next week's cumulative tests.

SPA IB(5) -- Textbook culture pages 172-175 were reviewed in preparation for next week's cumulative tests, along with workbook pages 62 and 64.  Students were not assigned any additional written work.

SPA IA (6)-- Textbook culture pages 56-60 were reviewed in class today in preparation for next week's cumulative tests.  Time constructions were also reviewed as workbook page 15 was completed orally as a class. No written homework was assigned.
