Operation Sealion

Operation Sealion was invented and put into action in order to eliminate any British threat to the exapansion towards West Europe. The Luftwaffe would destroy the RAF and soften up British defenses. This could be accomplished by bombing aerodromes and aircraft before they could take off the runways. Then the Nazi Army of 120,000 soldiers would land on the British coast, divided into two groups. Paratroopers would also land to aid the main army. Group A would conquer Hastings while group B captures Dorset and Devon. Their main target after that would be London to destroy the British once and for all. The Germans underestimated the British, as Hermann Goering stated, "My Luftwaffe is invincible. And now we turn to England. How long will this one last- two, three weeks?"

British Defense Plan

The Germans weren't the only force with a plan. The British and evacuated French troops had met on Dunkirk Beach. The British had 338,225 soldiers while the French had 120,000 that escaped from France. The Germans had them surrounded, but for some reason they didn't attack. The British also taught new combat tactics, taking into consideration how the Germans had attacked France. They had defended seaports and other likely places where the Germans would attack. They also outfitted beachs with defenses such as barbed wire, pill-boxes (these were like shelters that had a horizontal rectangular opening in the side which could be used to shoot out of), tank traps, and other things with the help of civilians. There were also further precautions taken so that the Germans could not identify any cities. In order to take over Britain, the Germans would have to take control of the skies. This resulted in the largest air battle in the history of the human affairs.
