Greece Arcadia Middle School Spanish Teacher
Hola y bienvenido a la página web de las clases de español de la señora Aguilar. Hi and welcome to Señora Aguilar's Spanish class web page.

Review for Proficiency We are beginning to review for the New York State Spanish Proficiency Exam. The Speaking Task part of the exam will begin on May 30th, with students scheduled to speak with me individually, each student completely 4 speaking tasks. In addition to these tasks that are worth 20 points out of a total of 100 for the complete exam, students will be assessed in class on their oral contributions from now until their speaking tasks. The class assessment is worth 10 points out of the 100.
The written part of the Proficiency Exam will take place on June 19 and will include a listening section, a reading section, and a written essay. This part of the total exam is worth the remaining 70 points.

How to use this site for review:On this site you will find flashcards that support the vocabulary we have covered, are covering currently or will cover by the time of the exam. The best way to use these cards is to spend at least 15 minutes every night reviewing them. Make sure that you not only know the Spanish to English, but also the English to Spanish.

In addition to the flashcards for vocabulary, you will find exercises that will help you with correct verb form usage and other grammar support. Spend some time each evening with these exercises as well. They will help you put together sentences that will be useful for the speaking tasks as well as reading and writing. The exercises start with Chapter 6 and go through Chapter 8. Then the activities run from Chapter 1 through Chapter 5. At the end are specific topic exercises.

In class, focus on practicing what we cover and in particular, speak whenever possible in Spanish, answering questions and working on previous exam speaking tasks.

At home, use your blue book or the equivalent stapled copy to practice the speaking tasks. Write out possible dialogs that will focus on the vocabulary and verbs you would likely use for each task. Cut out some of the tasks from your book and paste each one on a 3X5 card. Write some vocabulary and verb forms on the back of the card to jog your memory about what you will need to speak on the particular topic that makes up the task. For example: Let's say you are asking a friend to go on a picnic. You will want to know how to ask them about going, where you would be going, the time and what each of you would be taking to the picnic. Some good phrases or words are: ir de picnic (to go on a picnic), ¿A dónde vamos? (Where are we going?) ¿Cuándo vamos? (When are we going?) or ¿A qué hora vamos? (At what time are we going?) Voy a traer hamburguesas, papitas y refrescos. (I am going to bring hamburgers, potato chips and soft drinks.) Y tú, ¿qué vas a traer? (And you, what are you going to bring?) Remember to start your speaking task with Hola, ¿cómo estás? or answer Estoy bien. ¿Y tú? Remember that the tasks are like a game of ping pong. You are answering and sending the ball back into the other person's court, in this case, the teacher's court.

Attend the Wednesday after school review sessions.: These are an excellent way to get additional practice on the speaking tasks and to have me review specific topics that you do not understand.
