TISHREI CHAGIM - SUKKOT

LULAV AND ETROG

The Torah tells us that on Sukkot we must take the branches and fruit of beautiful trees and be happy.

We do this mitzvah by holding 3 types of branches and a fruit together. This is called a lulav.  We say a blessing over the lulav during the eight days of Sukkot. The special plants that make up the lulav are from Israel and they are called the 'arbah minim', or 'the four species'.

ARBAH MINIM

Lulav- the branch of a palm tree bound with:

Haddasim- twigs of a myrtle tree

Aravot- branches of a willow tree

Etrog- the fruit of a special citrus tree

Each of the plants in the lulav and etrog is different.  They are like the different types of Jewish people.  We all have something different and special but we are all part of the Jewish people.

BLESSING THE LULAV

The lulav is held in the right hand.  The etrog is held in the left hand.  We say the blessing:

Baruch ata Adonai Elohainu melech ha'olam
asher kidshanu b'mitzvotav v'tzivanu al netilat lulav.

Blessed are You, Lord our God, Ruler of the universe, Who has commanded us to take up the lulav.

Then we shake the lulav and etrog to the right, left, in front, behind, up and down.  We do this to show that God is everywhere.

Here is a song to sing on Sukkot about shaking the lulav and etrog.

LULAV AND ETROG - BY UNCLE VELVEL

On the 15th of Tishrei ai yai yai yai
Hashem will bless the whole wide world
                      A LULAV we will shake
                      a sukkah we will make
We wish you a sweet New Year

LULAV and ETROG shake us, shake us
LULAV and ETROG shake us, shake us
LULAV and ETROG shake us, shake us
                      Shake us all around
