===========================================

SER  VS   ESTAR"TO BE" in Spanish

SER vs. ESTAR

Both are irregular verbs that indicate different aspects
of the English verb "to be."

However, they are not interchangeable.
The difference is obvious to native speakers but must be learned by English speakers.

ser                 estar
soy  somos      estoy  estamos
eres  sois      estás  estáis
es    son       está  están

(and all other tenses: Past, present, future)

Below are some of the most important differences

ser                         estar
related to "essence"        related to "status"
describes characteristics   describes condition, mood,
                                           state
inherent qualities          status at a particular time
location of events          location of persons, places,
                                             things
possession of object        location of object
origin of object            appearance of object (when
                                different from norm)
time expressions            weather conditions
                                      (observations)

Other verbs meaning "to be"
Hay, hacer, and tenercan mean "to be" in certain idiomatic expressions:
    Hay means "there is, there are" and indicates existence
of one or more persons or objects.
    It is a defective form of the verb haber and has no distinct plural form. It is often accompanied
by a number or indefinite article:

hay una persona  hay dos personas

  Hacer corresponds to "to be" in certain weather expressions, which are in the third person singular;
these must be memorized:

  Hace buen tiempo, hace sol, hace calor, etc.

  Tener is used in idiomatic expressions that can not be directly translated into English, although there exist cognate expressions in other Romance languages:

  tener calor, tener hambre, tener miedo, tener prisa, etc.
