Modal verbs and the imperfect (simple past forms) of "haben" and "sein" conjugate the same way: the "ich" and the "er/sie/es" form are identical and the ending for all the other forms are the same in the present tense.

mögen - mochten

There are no umlauts or vowel changes in the imperfect forms of modal verbs.
