Test Prep 1

You can learn a lot about geography by visiting the Finger Lakes area of New York. This area is known for its many landforms. Some visitors come to enjoy the Finger Lakes themselves. These are 11 lakes spread out in the shape of a hand. Carved by glaciers, the lakes are icy blue in color. Other visitors come to see the waterfalls that plunge hundreds of feet down rocky cliffs. Green Lakes State Park has two lakes that are emerald green. The Finger Lakes region also includes the famous gorges of Ithaca. A gorge is a narrow canyon that forms in the rock below a waterfall. Ithaca's gorges have brought many visitors to the area. Visitors stay in hotels, eat in restaurants, and buy gifts. This has helped the area's economy grow. Many visitors enjoy the Montezuma National Wildlife Refuge. It has huge flocks of geese and other water birds. The refuge protects these birds and their environment.
